Male victims of domestic abuse - an under served group of men

Did you know that men can also be victims of domestic violence
by female perpetrators?

79,500 men experienced assault by a female perpetrator, 77% of these assaults were in a home (ABS Personal Safety Survey 2005)

When the distressed and embarrassed men finally sought help,  43-64% were told “we only help women here” (Douglas & Hines, 2011, Journal of Family Violence)

In Australia, there are less than 10 information sites and services specifically helping men experiencing family violence.

Where do male victims get support & practical assistance in rebuilding their lives?

There are so many myths and misconceptions about domestic abuse experienced by male victims at the hands of female perpetrators.

While there is no denying female victims also experience distress, this is no excuse to undermine the experience of male victims or ignore that fact that female perpetrators need to be accountable for their behaviour.

The damaging behaviour by female perpetrators is often underestimated and overlooked, leaving men in silent distress.

I saw there were so many services for women and female victims, rightly so, that when I sought out other information for male clients experiencing abuse by their partners, there were little resources. So I wrote the book on it!

With minimal services addressing the specific way that men experience domestic abuse and violence, this book is well overdue to help men rebuild their lives and raise social awareness.

The following websites can provide you with more information about male victims of domestic abuse and violence;

www.drceli.com.au - Conference presentations and Dr. Celi's media interviews on this topic over the last few years.

www.oneinthree.com.au - statistics and information specifically on male victims of family violence

www.man.org.au - The Men's Advisory Network in Perth Australia commissioned and released Australia's first qualitative study on male victims of domestic abuse/violence (available online).  I assisted in the launch of the report and several media interviews.
