Psychologist or Psychiatrist? What's the difference?
Excuse my silence over the last month or so. With the manuscript of my second book now edited, formatted and sent off to the printers, I'm in preparation for it's release into bookstores for Christmas.
So, a bit more breathing space to bring you your next newsletter! Last newsletter I mentioned sending information on what the difference was between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist.
Here are some insights and pointers to introduce the difference that I then expand on in the podcast link below.
Psychologists We've done a minimum of 6 years training to learn how people tick and where our thought patterns and perceptions lead us astray.
How us humans are motivated, how we emotionally process & reason out information, how we make decisions, cope and manage stress. Psychologists also learn about personality styles, where our thinking goes astray and the various symptoms that arise when our mental/emotional system is under strain. To name but a few of the areas we help people with. The focus of a Psychologist is around fine tuning our perceptions and thinking system. That of a Psychiatrist is the medication that helps to regulate our mood chemistry.
Psychiatrists
Also learning about elements of human psychology to do their job, their main focus is how particular medications used for psychological/psychiatric conditions best address the various symptoms. The medications that Psychiatrists deal with are not like your everyday Panadol. Managing the introduction of these medications to your body appropriately requires their medical guidance initially. Then as directed by their oversight and supervision of your symptoms and medications. Psychologists and Psychiatrists
We often collaborate to ensure the best of each of our skills combine to bring you the best of care for your symptoms. The GP is also a part of this picture in linking Psychiatrists and Psychologists and also assisting in the monitoring and prescription of some of the medications above, but not all.
